Lafarge, the world leader in construction materials, has signed an agreement with Germany's Basalt AG to acquire Basalt's refractory businesses. As a result of this agreement, Basalt Feuerfest GmbH and its subsidiaries will join the Monolithics activity of Lafarge's Specialty Products Division.
With sales of FRF 270 million (41 million Euros) and 160 employees, Basalt Feuerfest GmbH is an important player in the European refractory market. Its industrial facilities, comprising five plants and a quarry, are located in Germany, Austria and Italy.
This acquisition represents an important step in the Monolithics activity's international expansion. It will increase the activity's sales to FRF 1.3 billion (around 198 million Euros) and confirm Lafarge's leadership position in the European monolithic refractory market.
The Monolithics activity already offers a broad range of products and technical solutions suited to the leading-edge technologies used by Lafarge's customers in the steel, metal casting, aluminum and incineration industries, as well as to their very-high-temperature manufacturing processes.
Lafarge employs 65,000 people in 65 countries and generates annual sales of FRF 65 billion (10 billion Euros).
