In June of this year, over 40,000 employees of the Lafarge Group were invited to take part in the capital increase operation reserved for Group employees. Named "Lafarge en action 99", the operation has now been completed and adjudged a success, since 52% of employees concerned chose to subscribe shares.
In spite of the complexity and variety of local regulations, the operation has been proposed to a great number of countries. The international response to the scheme was strong, since more than 60% of participants reside out of France.
In all, FRF 197 million (30 million euros) of capital have been invested by the employees of 33 different countries.
The scale of this investment reflects the confidence of employees in the Group's management and growth strategy. Employees now hold 1.7% of the capital of Lafarge.
World leader in construction materials, the Lafarge Group employs 66,000 people in more than 65 countries. In 1998, it recorded sales of FRF 64.3 billion (almost 10 billion euros).
