Lafarge has been awarded the Trophée 2001 "Private Sector Company" Prize for its first sustainable development report, on the occasion of its publication in November 2001, as well as for all its information media concerning the environment. This honour was awarded by the French Order of Chartered Accountants in conjunction with the United Nations programme for the environment. The trophy (which Lafarge shares with the Suez group) rewards the companies that have set up the best environment information tools for sustainable development.
The first Lafarge sustainable development report
A tool of transparency and expression of responsibility to the public, Lafarge's report defines performance indicators and sets specific targets for the future in terms of the three dimensions of sustainable development – economic, social and environmental. This first report is illustrated by projects and achievements by Lafarge teams throughout the world.
A pro-active approach based on dialogue
The report reflects the Group's desire to set up meaningful dialogue with its various stakeholders, including shareholders, employees, public authorities, local communities, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), customers, suppliers, partners, end users, the media and other companies. It incorporates multiple external viewpoints, including on sensitive subjects, and adopts a pro-active position, particularly with regard to reporting.
Among the original aspects of this approach are:
The inclusion of the ratings and assessments awarded by sustainability analysts and rating agencies in the social field (Dow Jones Sustainability World Index, SAM, ARESE, etc.).
The establishment of economic, social and environmental performance indicators (in conjunction with WWF as part of its worldwide partnership with Lafarge).
Featuring external views in the report itself from internationally recognised experts in the field of sustainable development, including the Natural Step (environment), CARE (local development), and the ZERI Foundation (Zero Emission Research Initiative).
A comprehensive presentation of the issues and impacts specific to the Group businesses linked to sustainable development.
The award recognises a thirty-year commitment by the Lafarge Group, which considers that industrial success is only possible in a context of sustainable development. The report is available on this site under "Group Profile".
World leader in building materials, Lafarge employs 85,000 people in 75 countries. Lafarge holds top-ranking positions in all four of its Divisions: Cement, Aggregates & Concrete, Roofing and Gypsum, and recorded sales of euro 12.2 billion in 2000.
