LafargeHolcim engineer travels to Myanmar to help build an ICRC hospital for landmine victims

In the last article on our partnership with the humanitarian organization the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), we met LafargeHolcim engineer Antoine Carnot who ran training courses for the ICRC field engineers in Switzerland. This time, we’re following Antoine as he travels to Myanmar to participate in the construction of an ICRC hospital for landmine victims.

Building a hospital in Myanmar

As part of our partnership with the ICRC, Antoine Carnot became the first LafargeHolcim employee to participate in joint learning and the exchange of expertise at field level in 2015. He spent two weeks at the ICRC’s site in Mythchina, in the north west of Myanmar where they are building a hospital for rehabilitating victims of anti-personnel mines who have suffered severe and life-changing injuries, including leg and arm amputations.

Antoine said: "Past conflict in the area continues to lead to sporadic violence and clashes, and mines remain a constant threat to people who live there. Having visited the general hospital next to the ICRC site, it was very clear why the new hospital was needed.  The general hospital was in a poor physical condition and was obviously very difficult to keep clean and hygienic.”

Antoine, a French national, was given paid leave from his job, the main objective of which was to exchange knowledge on construction in challenging environments with operational ICRC teams and to recommend best practices, technologies and materials to deliver quality construction.


Employees helping deliver on our 2030 Plan

In August this year Antoine worked with the ICRC on projects for the benefit of those be held in a detention center in Kyrgyzstan. He also delivered a two-day on-site training course to reinforce the competence and capacity of the local team on critical concrete applications. During this period, he guided ICRC’s engineers in construction and also gained relevant insights for LafargeHolcim: “The company benefits as it gains deeper insight into the needs of customers in non-industrial environments.  A small example is that the cement bags on site had mixing and application instructions in Chinese, which no one there can understand. I fed this back into our own processes at LafargeHolcim.”

His efforts are a great example of how employees help deliver LafargeHolcim’s Plan 2030 Sustainability Strategy, one element of which is supporting people and communities. It also helps the company contribute to the delivery of a selection of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
