Our integrated concrete offer helps high speed trains conquer the Pyrenees

In December 2010, the high-speed train line (LGV) from Perpignan (France) to Figueras (Spain) was put into service, thereby linking these two cities by LGV for the first time. Barcelona is now only 50 minutes from Perpignan and 5.5 hours from Paris thanks to LafargeHolcim's integral role as concrete supplier on this major project which required a reliable partner capable of providing tailor-made solutions.

The Perpignan-Figueras rail segment is a high-speed line along which passenger trains regularly reach speeds of 300 km/h. And the twin-bore Perthus tunnel, which travels through 8.3 km of solid bedrock, was built to enable trains to maintain their high speeds, even while crossing the Pyrenees mountain range!

The tunnel is just one of the many colossal works needed to complete the LGV, which includes numerous bridges, viaducts and flyovers. Construction company Eiffage TP, one of the three major French contractors, managed these key infrastructure components and called on LafargeHolcim to supply the project with over 100,000 m3 of concrete following the success of our close collaboration on the Millau Viaduct.

Our integrated offer included providing mobile mixing plants located on different worksites and an extensive network of permanent plants, as well as strict materials quality control to ensure high quality concrete and daily logistical planning, all of which brought real added value to the general contractor.

Now that France and Spain’s Mediterranean coasts are linked via high-speed rail, you can simply sit back and enjoy the ride between Paris and Barcelona!
