Reus hospital gives its patients a concrete-solid health!

In Reus, northeast Spain, beauty and aesthetics are serving health. With its original design, green spaces and skylights, University Hospital Sant Joan heals its patients and takes good care of its appearance... thanks to LafargeHolcim's decorative concrete Artevia®!

Visiting a hospital is rarely fun. Except perhaps in Reus, northeast Spain, where the University Hospital stands out for the beauty of its futuristic lines and the harmony of its architecture.

Designed by two architectural agencies, Corea & Moran Arquitectura and Pich-Aguilera Architects, the Sant Joan hospital has 6 nursing units which are placed over a continuous ground floor, with a basement underneath and are connected to a ‘rambla’, the pedestrian aisle of the establishment.

Its long oblique concrete façade and terraces -converted into green spaces- mix harmoniously with the new technology park and neighboring campus, while limiting the impact of the building on the urban landscape. These fitted gardens, visible from every room of the hospital, also contribute to improving the patients’ comfort.

Our Lafarge cement and concrete at the heart of a more beautiful and more ecological hospital

To build this unique project featuring contemporary design and responding to the comfort of patients and staff, we have provided:

  • 60,000 tons of cement
  • 958m3 Artevia® decorative concrete.

In addition, the ingenious design and innovative features of Sant Joan hospital also reduce its energy consumption by 35% compared to the average hospital:

  • Its ventilated façade eliminates thermal bridges;
  • Concrete panels increase the thermal inertia of the building;
  • Photovoltaic panels produce electricity;
  • Courtyards and windows are arranged so that the entire workspace, consultation and hospitalization areas benefit from natural light;
  • etc.

Because we do not compromise with health!
