South Africa - An employee well-being program

For the past 12 years, LafargeHolcim has been carrying out an AIDS prevention and treatment program in South Africa. Our South African business has now decided to expand its actions and focus on more general employee well-being.

 

Objectives

  • To build on the success of the AIDS prevention and treatment program;
  • To improve the physical and psychological health of LafargeHolcim employees in South Africa and therefore everyone's well-being.

Summary

For over 10 years, LafargeHolcim in South Africa has been carrying out an AIDS prevention and treatment program with the aim of managing existing medical conditions and preventing new infections.

Now, in addition to this program, our South African business has decided to expand the scope of its action to tackle more general employee well-being - that is the aim of the Work Wellness Program, led by the local Human Resources team in collaboration with the Communications team.

Based on the results of an annual knowledge, attitudes and practices survey conducted to assess the success of LafargeHolcim's healthcare initiatives in South Africa, the Work Wellness Program focuses on six themes (one every two months) coinciding with key dates in the calendar of the business's Healthcare department:

  • "Living healthily, living well",
  • "Alcohol, drugs and you",
  • "Breast cancer",
  • "Managing stress",
  • "TB and you"
  • and "Let's celebrate our lifestyle improvements".

These themes are addressed at sites via a range of communication tools.

Results

In 2013, 75% of employees responded to the knowledge, attitudes and practices survey and progress was recorded across all criteria assessed. The program demonstrates significant involvement and a real commitment to subjects by employees. Meanwhile, the AIDS prevention and treatment program is continuing to pay off, with the prevalence rate of AIDS within LafargeHolcim South Africa significantly below the national average.
