Holcim Group's new competence center for R&D and training to be established in Holderbank in Canton Aargau

The growth-oriented, international building materials group aims to set standards for the future with a new building project in Holderbank. The Group's new competence center in the Schachen commercial park will provide space for an additional 250 jobs for highly qualified specialists as well as underscoring the significance of research, development and training within the company. The new building is to be planned in line with the latest advancements in sustainable construction and shall put Holcim's core products to creative use within an outstanding design.

Comprising research laboratories, additional office space and a generously sized training center, the 15,000 m2 building complex will allow the Group to increase its current workforce in Holderbank from 550 to over 800, testifying to Holcim's commitment to the location.

The new building underlines the Group's claim to technology leadership in the building materials sector. New opportunities for R&D are to be created, in particular in the field of product and process innovation. The expansion of training facilities to advance the transfer of know-how within the Group reflects the dynamic growth that Holcim is witnessing.

Holcim is especially committed to sustainability. The new building is thus intended to define a distinctive benchmark for sustainable construction going forward. The specifications stipulate that the overall building complex must meet the "Minergie" energy efficiency standard. The offices and the entire training center, including the large auditorium, will even meet the passive house criteria of the "Minergie P-Eco standard". In commissioning the project, Holcim is realizing a further sustainable office building which is completely in line with the provisions and ideas of the Holcim Foundation for Sustainable Construction.

Holcim will invite several architects both from within and outside Switzerland to tender studies. The project selected by an international jury is to be presented to the authorities, neighbors and the public before the end of the current year. Assuming that the necessary permits are issued by the second half of 2009 at the latest, construction work can commence in mid-2010 and the competence center will be up and running in time for Holcim's centenary celebrations in 2012.
