"Holderbank" expand production capacity in North America

US-based Holnam Inc. (Holnam) - a Group company of "Holderbank" Financière Glaris Ltd. ("Holderbank") - plans to build a technologically and ecologically super-efficient cement plant in Lee Island (Missouri). The facility - to be located some 80 kilometers to the southeast of St. Louis - will have a single kiln line with an annual capacity of 4 million tonnes of cement. The plant will also have its own river terminal on the Mississippi. Given this strategic location on the river, Holnam will be able to supply a regional market of 40 million tonnes with very low distribution costs. Providing ideal backup for the Clarksville plant, Lee Island will significantly improve Holnam's competitive position and delivery times in these key markets.

The decision to build a new plant was prompted by long-term forecasts pointing to further growth in cement consumption due to high needs for infrastructure, triggering demand well in excess of local supply. Permit applications have already been submitted, and the new plant could conceivably go on stream by end-2003.

Operating 14 plants boasting a combined production capacity of more than 13 million tonnes, Holnam is the leading cement producer in the US market. The company has a workforce of around 2,500.

With majority and minority interests in over 70 countries on all continents, "Holderbank" is one of the world's leading suppliers of cement, as well as aggregates (gravel and sand), concrete and construction-related services.
