The Lafarge Group has acquired PREMEX, one of the leading producers of ready-mix concrete in the Caracas region.
Premex operates twelve production sites situated in the center of the country, the principal market of Venezuela, and an extensive marketing network. It is also highly active in aggregate production. The company employs 400 people and generated sales in 1998 of roughly FRF 150 million (more than 23 million Euros). Its ready-mix volumes last year were just below 300,000 m3.
This acquisition, which is the Aggregate & Concrete division's first investment in Venezuela, strengthens the Lafarge Group's industrial presence in the country. The Group has operated in the country since 1994 through its subsidiary Fabrica Nacional de Cementos, which runs two cement plants. Lafarge also holds a 23% interest in Cementos Catatumbo on the Maracaibo market.
World leader in construction materials, Lafarge employs 66,000 people in more than 65 countries and generated sales in 1998 of FRF 64.3 billion (roughly 10 billion Euros).
