Harnessing data for better environmental transparency

12 September 2019

At LafargeHolcim, we recognize our responsibility to not only reduce our own emissions, but to lead the market in the same direction.

The ViroDecs™ initiative from Holcim-Australia is one example of how we do that. Through the initiative we can now provide Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) to explain the embodied environmental impacts of our ready-mix concrete.

These EPDs were developed through a major effort of data collection and analysis, and fill a gap that is often missing in key infrastructure and building projects in Australia. With ViroDecs™ we support sustainable procurement and materials selection, while at the same time supporting the standardization and transparency of environmental claims.

ViroDecs™ moves beyond generic environmental information to product, company and geographically-specific information. This allows builders to make deeper, broader and more customized analyses, and to have greater confidence in their results.

Data were collected from over 190 concrete batching plant sites and 46 quarries. These were fed into an ISO14044-compliant Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) model by specialist practitioners, which ultimately generated an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) which has been independently reviewed by an approved, third-party verifier.

ViroDecs™ can help shape the way the construction industry analyzes the environmental impact of buildings and infrastructure. We hope they will also provide support to customers who join us in creating a more sustainable infrastructure and building industry.
