France: LafargeHolcim sand on the beaches of Paris Plages!

20 July 2012

LafargeHolcim has been a partner of Paris Plages since the beginning of the operation, in 2002.

For the 2016 edition, LafargeHolcim delivered 3,500 tons of sand from the Bernières quarry in Normandy. Dating back to the quaternary (100,000 to 800,000 years), the sand was chosen for its softness and ultra fine grain, perfect for a nice real beach feel! The sand was cleaned by water steam each week at night to kill all bacteria. It was also analyzed by the hygiene lab of the City of Paris for safe summer fun!

Three barges and one pusher craft made the 175-km journey up the Seine River to deliver the sand. By using environmentally-friendly waterway transport, LafargeHolcim saved 250 trucks from the streets of Paris and cut the operation's CO2 emissions by threefold! Plus, this means of transport is economical, punctual and creates no sound pollution or traffic jams.

In its 15th year of partnership, LafargeHolcim offered fun & educational activities around biodiversity for kids visiting Paris Plages.
